What I have learned in the past…
What I have learned over the past year is that, people buy what they want to buy.
For instance when I put together the Boot Camp for non-profits – it was to cover lots of topics that were on their own hit list to know more about. I surveyed what were their challenges, what they would be interested in and I got some feedback.
- They didn’t like the name of the event a “Boot Camp.”
- They didn’t consider themselves as floundering non-profits (the ones who would attend).
- The audience I was targeting either didn’t want help or weren’t coming.
- The price was too, too low even though there was extreme value in attending and learning
When I offered Free to Low, or inexpensive programs to people to help them grow and develop their businesses, there wasn’t an interest. Why? People will buy what they want to buy.
When I performed work for people, because they needed help in areas outside my marketing expertise – I helped them. Yes, I got paid, some thought I ought to do more and not get paid for helping them. After all, I was helping them out wasn’t I?
Appreciation is a key word and action step.
Perhaps it was me, who was not Appreciative of all my gifts and talents – they are of value and deserve to be treated as so.
The lack of Appreciation from helping strangers and friends in providing a service to help them gain more time, file, organize their office space, do errands, and connect them to other people and resources that could help them with their challenges.
In 2008, I will be more Appreciative of my time, gifts, talents and skills. There are many things to be Thankful for in 2007. I am sure you have your long list of things too!
What I have also learned is that customers/clients (I tend to use clients more often) buy what they want to buy. Are you ready for them?
Do you have your order sheet written up? You need to consider what offers and price points in putting together your order or price sheets. It is an unending temptation to do what I was doing just to get money in the door, or to sell your services or products at a lower price point. It rarely works.
People don’t appreciate the FREE advice, or the help that you give them, unless they ask for it and are willing to pay for it.
Does this mean you quit helping people? No. It just means that you have to be clear in why you want to help. What’s your intention?
Giving is so much fun and it’s so rewarding. (Another topic on another day)
I put out earlier this month, to teach people how to Network – I even offered it FREE to 10 people. No bites. This proves my point about offering something for FREE. I like free things too – but then I only want something free if I am looking for it. Either this means people are looking for something free, or learning to network is not something they want to learn.
Back to the Act of Appreciation, I would like to give Thanks the following people who have helped me as mentors and people who have commented on my blogs this past year:
Wishing you all the very best in 2008.
Happiness & Success
