Are Art Auctions for You?

I had a chance to speak to Brent Luebke of Lando Gallery an Art Auction House in Edmonton, AB the other day. I wanted to find out more about art auctions and how they work I’ve been to auctions before, one of my friends really enjoy going to auctions I’ve bought jewelery, furniture and even art. Lando caters to the Artist and the Collector. And no they don’t sell furniture and houses.

Brent discussed quite a few things with me, however I am really just going to write about how an Art Auction can benefit Artists.

Here’s what I can tell you about Brent he became an Art Dealer in 1960, worked for the Boomer Collection in 2000 until they started to downsize in 2002 after that he started Lando Auctions.

Auctions started in the 1890’s, that’s about 100 years ago. It was a way for Artists to get known and collectors to discover who they like and don’t like. This started a following for Artists.

Auction houses are very popular in Paris, New York and the UK, they all have different levels of sales of which the collector will have a wide variety of art to choose from as well as the prices they are willing to pay.

I asked Brent, “If an Artist wants to use Auctions as an avenue to sell their work, where should they start?”

He said, “if you are a new artist it’s best to establish a name for yourself first, sell at least 20 pieces of art or have 5 years of experience selling in the marketplace. Be able to produce a sales record, some auction houses will consign. He also warned Artists to be conscious of the size of art work they produce, anything over 4′ high and 8′ wide it becomes harder to sell because most people will be buying art to display in their homes or offices. Space is a premium for some people”.

Do visit an Art Auction house from time to time, as you will learn how the Auction works, the price point Art will go for, what the collectors are looking for, it’s rather fun to watch. The next Auction is In October at Lando’s, do check them out.

Many artists that have a their name known can sell their work 3x or more. For example some of Noami Jacksons’ art work has been sold 5x.

Do you have an experience selling in an Auction that you would like to share? Drop me a line. I would love to hear about your experience.

Until next time.

Happiness & Success to you..
