Are Art Auctions for You?

I had a chance to speak to Brent Luebke of Lando Gallery an Art Auction House in Edmonton, AB the other day. I wanted to find out more about art auctions and how they work I’ve been to auctions before, one of my friends really enjoy going to auctions I’ve bought jewelery, furniture and even art. Lando caters to the Artist and the Collector. And no they don’t sell furniture and houses.

Brent discussed quite a few things with me, however I am really just going to write about how an Art Auction can benefit Artists.

Here’s what I can tell you about Brent he became an Art Dealer in 1960, worked for the Boomer Collection in 2000 until they started to downsize in 2002 after that he started Lando Auctions.

Auctions started in the 1890’s, that’s about 100 years ago. It was a way for Artists to get known and collectors to discover who they like and don’t like. This started a following for Artists.

Auction houses are very popular in Paris, New York and the UK, they all have different levels of sales of which the collector will have a wide variety of art to choose from as well as the prices they are willing to pay.

I asked Brent, “If an Artist wants to use Auctions as an avenue to sell their work, where should they start?”

He said, “if you are a new artist it’s best to establish a name for yourself first, sell at least 20 pieces of art or have 5 years of experience selling in the marketplace. Be able to produce a sales record, some auction houses will consign. He also warned Artists to be conscious of the size of art work they produce, anything over 4′ high and 8′ wide it becomes harder to sell because most people will be buying art to display in their homes or offices. Space is a premium for some people”.

Do visit an Art Auction house from time to time, as you will learn how the Auction works, the price point Art will go for, what the collectors are looking for, it’s rather fun to watch. The next Auction is In October at Lando’s, do check them out.

Many artists that have a their name known can sell their work 3x or more. For example some of Noami Jacksons’ art work has been sold 5x.

Do you have an experience selling in an Auction that you would like to share? Drop me a line. I would love to hear about your experience.

Until next time.

Happiness & Success to you..

Finally, an Art Fund

IndexAtlas Art Industry Fund aims to build and finance the future pillars of the Art Industry (the industry involved in the creation, sale, distribution, display, promotion, marketing and development of art and art-related products) through targeted industry-related private equity investments in Art Industry Companies (companies whose business model is significantly dependent upon and structured around serving the Art Industry and its participants) with significant growth potential.

On a more limited basis, IndexAtlas Art Industry Fund will trade and invest in the shares of Art Stocks - publicly traded companies involved in the Art Industry. Although the Art Industry is largely comprised of unlisted companies, a handful of publicly traded companies do exist and more are anticipated to develop in the near future. Some of the publicly-traded companies have a relatively inactive market for their stock due to the nature of the Art Industry itself. In such cases the Fund applies private equity investment criteria and approaches in selecting and dealing with these public companies. For more information go to:

Want to become a full-time Artist?

I made a decision to do more art and my goal is to be a full-time artist. Well, if figured if songwriters, singers and actors can do it why not me?

How was I going to achieve this?

For a while now, I have been playing around, moonlighting if you will, the one thing I knew I would have to do is figure out who my targeted audience is. Once I began to do my research and discovered who they are I began to be more serious in developing my marketing plan.

The other thing was to talk to other artists to see how they have moved from dabbling, to part-time to full-time. What other Artists shared with me was to find Administration work, or something that you could earn a living while promoting and getting yourself and art/talent out.
1. Cruise on-line to find Artist resources and sites that would go to and learn some “how to’s.” Here are a few sites that I have found very useful for me and will help you and I am sure there are many, many more.

www.theartentrepreneur.com
www.conceptart.org
www.senkarikstuff.com - Jack White has written many books about marketing your art and how to do it. I bought his 1st one, it was awesome and I will certainly be buying more.

2. Marketing is what is doing to drive your sales, it doesn’t matter if you are an Artist or some other business that provides a service or product. Actually 70% of your success will come from the marketing initiatives that you do.

3. Start making a list of action steps that you are willing to take. The first thing on my list was to decide who my client was going to be. For me it is Client Gifts. I can help business owners transform their relationships by them giving client appreciation gifts.

Did you know that.. “There is more hunger for love & appreciation in this world than for bread.” Mother Theresa

4. As an Artist you need to change your mind about what your art is - Is it a product to sell - or is it a hobby that you just give away to friends as gifts or to hide your art in your closet?

5. You must start to market yourself and your art at least 2 hours a day and work it up to 4 hours a day for at least six months, it is ongoing. Just to give yourself a boost start with 4 hours.

6. Get involved in your targeted audience, by joining Associations, Networking groups to get more contacts to sell to.

7. Do co-op projects with other artists it will help build your self-confidence and energy to move forward.

8. Subscribe to my Artist Marketing e-zine - you’ll get more detailed marketing tips and resources. It’s delivered to you every Thursday.

Until next time - “Make yourself a prosperous week!”

Learn from Local Marketing Leaders

Stephen Lau, a Linkedin member has been very busy putting together a Local Linkedin Chapter Networking since February, 2008.

What a dynamic evening on May 28th. It was just WOW! Stephen had hoped it would be rated as a 5 star event. And, it was!
On a very short notice, 3 days actually Walter Schwabe of Fusedlogic, Evita McConnell of Evita McConnnell Graphics Inc, and Joe MacKay of Revovideo put together three different presentations called: Strategy - Branding & Video.

For those of you who were thinking about attending, or just couldn’t make it - I am sure the next Mix & Market will be a great event.

Dinner was held at the Golden Rice Bowl, the very best in cuisine and service. I would highly recommend you going there sometime. You’ll find them at www.goldenricebowl.ca

This is a picture of me presenting three Heart-on-the-Line Awards to our wonderful speakers. (I’m on the far left and Stephen is on the far right. In between is.. Evita, Joe and Walter.

I’m not sure what Stephen is cooking up for the next Mix & Market - be sure you won’t want to miss it!
PS. You need a Linkedin Account. You can join my network at: www.linkedin.com/mlhudson ask to be invited.

PSS. What I haven’t shared with you yet, Joe plays a mean drum. So besides just learning from local experts we got to be entertained too!

Until next time,

Give a gift of Appreciation
